The Three Great Teachers of Orthodox Christianity and Hellenism

What makes a good teacher? Is a good teacher one that passes on vast knowledge? One that inspires students to excel? Or one that has a major impact on the lives of their students?

Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom - the Three Hierarchs of Christianity are considered three of the most influential teachers in the Greek Orthodox Church and other Christian churches. They are considered outstanding teachers within the realm of their Christian faith, but also for encouraging education in secular subjects stemming from the Hellenic world.

That’s why we created a new collection dedicated to the three great luminaries of Greek education and learning, and “The Three Hierarchs Chapel” – a beautiful, animated story about a group of children who meet an old priest at a chapel who introduces them to the wisdom of the Three Hierarchs. The children are impressed by their quotes about education, such as this one by Gregory the Theologian: “Adorn the souls of children with the right education, and everything else will follow.”

Greek diaspora kids learning about Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom, connect to the roots of their Greek heritage and Hellenic education. That’s why January 30th – a national school holiday in Greece - is dedicated to the Three Hierarchs.

At Ellinopoula, we consider the Greek language inseparable from the traditions of Hellenism. For this reason, it gives us great pride to convey the wisdom and heritage of the Three Hierarchs to Greek diaspora children learning Greek online, either via our online platform or through our live online Greek classes.
